Teacher Training: English PGCE & GTP

Why English at the Nottingham School of Education?

Our Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) English courses explore the inextricable links between theory and practice and you will be encouraged to develop a principled approach to your teaching based on your own informed theory of teaching and learning English. This development will be firmly based on your experiences and observations within the classroom setting. You will also be encouraged to be supportive, to adopt enjoyable and collaborative ways of working.

We work very closely with partnership schools to ensure that you develop an in-depth understanding of the English curriculum, and to keep the course relevant to the changing demands of English teaching.

What are the PGCE and GTP English courses about?

A central purpose of is to help you to become familiar with the National Curriculum, the Framework for Teaching English and GCSE and Post-16 syllabuses and to be able to teach these syllabuses imaginatively and well. We also want you to ask your own questions about the curriculum, about appropriate methodology and about teaching style. Our intention is to enable you to become more thoughtful about the purposes and content of your work in English and about the kind of teacher you wish to be.

What will you do?

Course components relate to the requirements of the National Curriculum and particular areas of focus are:

  • Methods of presenting poetry, the novel and short story.
  • Ways of developing children's abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • Ways of promoting knowledge of, and interest in, language.
  • Assessment of the English curriculum.
  • Information and communication technology in relation to English teaching.
