Ofsted 2010

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an employment based route to achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Trainee teachers are employed, usually on a one year contract, by a school in a supernumerary capacity. You can expect to be paid on the unqualified teacher scale (Grade 1).

"...the fact that I was employed and received a monthly income provided me with some security in respect to paying the mortgage."

Our motivation in putting the programme together has been to try to improve recruitment and retention in the East Midlands region, and particularly in the inner cities and former coalfields.

The underpinning principles of this programme are:

  • Commitment to teacher supply and retention in the East Midlands.
  • Provision of a high quality, supernumerary training route.
  • Flexibility to meet the diverse needs of trainee teachers and schools.
  • Integration within the University's teacher training provision.

The distinctive features of this programme are:

Entry requirements for a PGCE (Secondary)

Qualifications

You are required on entry to your teacher training course to hold a UK degree or equivalent qualification in, or closely related to, your proposed teaching subject.

In addition you must hold passes in English Language and mathematics at GCSE grade C or above, or an approved equivalent qualification. We can consider you if you do not have these GCSE qualifications at the time you apply, but you must obtain them before the course starts. In some circumstances it is possible for applicants holding a conditional offer on a place to take an examination in mathematics (equivalent to GCSE) at the Nottingham School of Education.

Medical requirements

In addition to the above qualifications, admission is subject to a satisfactory medical report.

Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure

All those applicants offered a conditional place on a teacher training course have to complete forms requesting an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau. In addition you will be required to disclose any previous criminal record to the Nottingham School of Education.
