This programme offers an opportunity to gain qualified teacher status and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), carrying credits towards a Masters level programme, through school- centred training in some of the best primary schools in the country and working with one of the best universities in the country.

About the course

This is an intensive one year course in which trainees will complete a Nottingham University Postgraduate Certificate by distance learning, based in a school of your choice from a national consortium of around 50 schools.

You will have a rewarding and worthwhile training year which equips you to take your place in the profession as a qualified teacher, ready to benefit the children placed in your care. The course also offers the opportunity to complete two assignments at Masters level and accrue credits which may be put towards a future MA in Education as part of your ongoing professional development.

This is a highly competitive course and we recommend making an early application. We begin the interview process in October each year, so later applicants may be disappointed to discover their first choice of school has already been filled. The 1st December deadline advertised in the GTTR pages does not have relevance for our selection process, as we interview each candidate for a specific school place.

Please note, whilst we make every effort to keep the information concerning ‘places available’ up to date, with two interview stages this is not always possible. If selected for interview you will be sent a list of places to make your choice of preferred school placement.

What our students say

‘ The fantastic exposure to hands on experience within all aspects of school life. In my home school I was immediately accepted as a member of staff and have been nurtured into the teacher that I had initially hoped to become.’

‘Being school based from day one; support of a mentor for the whole year; excellent support from the University of Nottingham;

‘The time spent in school is invaluable. This allows the trainee to form good relationships with the home class and the whole school team. I also felt prepared when it came to setting up my first class in September purely because I had observed my mentor setting up her classroom.’

‘The high standard of school-based training is a key strength of the SCITT. The opportunity for immersion in practical, first hand experience, of very good quality, is greatly valued by the trainees.’

'The course is very well structured to respond to the challenges presented by this nationwide SCITT. There is a good balance between centre-based national and regional training, and the training that takes place in schools.’

‘The experienced and well qualified partnership headteachers, teachers, advanced skills teachers, local authority advisers and independent consultants provide excellent role models. As a result of the very good training, the trainees are motivated and enthused to become skilled practitioners.’
