Chellaston Academy has been providing Initial Teacher Training for many years, delivering the Graduate Teacher Programme, Postgraduate Certificate of Education and Teach First successfully to numerous trainees. We are the lead school for a Derby Teaching Schools Alliance, a local group of seven schools offering teacher training via the School Direct route.
We are working in partnership with The University of Nottingham, a Russell Group institution that is rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. All trainees who successfully complete the School Direct course with us will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status and will gain a PGCE with Masters level credits. The University has a long history of Initial Teacher Education and we have worked together closely to develop a high quality programme based on experience, excellent Quality Assurance and a commitment to a high level of support for trainees.
Benefits of training through Chellaston Academy Alliance include the following:
- Well-developed links between schools across the Alliance for trainees who want to work in Derby and its surrounding area, so we understand the unique challenges our schools and children face.
- With the diversity of our partner schools and the relationships we have with other schools in the city, we can support training in areas of EAL and SEN.A bespoke professional themes programme for trainees wanting to teach in Derby and its surrounding area.
- A 'buddy' programme of peer support and critical friends that will sustain you beyond your ITT year
- The possibility of beginning your teaching career in a school where career progression through ITT, as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) and a Recently Qualified Teacher (RQT) are well-developed
If you are successful at The University of Nottingham interview your application will then be passed onto us for consideration.
If we decide to invite you for an interview in school, this will usually involve some or all of the following; an interview, interactive tasks involving pupils, some short written tests for literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge and the opportunity to talk to some staff and pupils. You will be told in advance about any interactive tasks you will be involved with. It is a rigorous and thorough process designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available.
After the course
Whilst there is no guarantee of employment after the School Direct course, our aim is to train teachers to work in our alliance of schools.
Our employment rates are consistently high, last year 100% of our Primary PGCE School Direct trainees secured employment as a teacher in a school.
