tbcHow do I navigate through Second Life and where can I go

Tutorial overview

This tutorial explains the various ways to find new locations and teleport in Second Life.

This tutorial is rated as - 2 Computers - Moderately technical

You'll need the following software - Second Life

You'll need the following hardware - See the Second Life website for minimum requirements.

Most regions of Second Life are open for anyone to visit. If you try to walk into an 'off limits' area, then you will see 'no entry' signs and won't be able to go any further. If you try to teleport somewhere you're not allowed you will return to your previous location.

There are several ways to teleport to new locations:

Search

  1. Open the Search window by clicking Edit > Search and select the Places tab
  2. Enter your search criteria and click Search to receive the search results
  3. Click on the name of a place to see information about it on the right
  4. Click Teleport to go to your chosen location

You can also search using the Map, which you can open by clicking the Map button at the bottom of the screen.

Click here for a video tutorial on searching.

Landmarks

While travelling around Second Life you will often be given landmarks to various locations. You can access your landmarks at any time by following these steps:

  1. Click Inventory at the bottom of Second Life to open your inventory folders
  2. Open your Landmarks folder to see a list all of the landmarks you have created or collected
  3. Double click a landmark to teleport to the location or right click and select About Landmark to open the landmark information window

Click here for a video tutorial on using and creating landmarks.

SLURLs

A SLURL is direct link to Second Life location. When viewing a SLURL in your web browser you will see a map of the area it teleports you to and a teleport button.

Simply click Teleport to open Second Life on your computer, enter your password if you are not already logged in, and you will be offered the chance to teleport directly to the location. When reading articles on Second Life on the web you will often see SLURLs to locations that are being referred to.

Here are some SLURLs for interesting locations you might like to explore in Second Life:
