Bioengineering  Research Group

The Bioengineering Research Group combines significant expertise in the areas of biomaterials and biomechanics. The Research group also collaborates with the Composites and Advanced Materials research groups with the Department. In addition the research group has joint projects with Orthopaedics and other divisions within and the Schools of Medical and Clinical sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Mathematical Sciences and the University Hospitals.

The group undertakes research in the areas of biomaterials and biomechanics, which includes:

  • cell surface interactions
  • tissue engineering structures
  • in vitro rapid screening
  • advanced assessment techniques
  • proteomics, composite structures
  • manufactured products
  • modelling, sensors
  • smart materials and functionalised surfaces
  • spinal biomechanics, automotive impact biomechanics
  • Orthopaedic technology evaluation
  • tissue characterisation
  • specification and evaluation of tissue engineered devices
  • modelling - analytical and numerical large and short timescales
  • development of imaging and analysis technologies

The Faculty of Engineering has developed significant expertise in the area of bioengineering at undergraduate level and at Master’s level, offering four closely related bioengineering courses.
