High Fliers

The Faculty of Engineering has developed a High Fliers programme to provide its top performing undergraduate students with tailored events and activities in recognition of their academic excellence.

The strategy aims to:

  • recognise and reward academic achievement
  • enhance students’ appeal to potential employers
  • encourage High Fliers into a research career

This scheme does this by:

  • inviting High Fliers to prestigious University events
  • organising social activities
  • providing access to exclusive, guaranteed postgraduate scholarships
  • providing opportunities to attend high profile guest lectures
  • giving High Fliers priority on the Faculty’s Engineering Research Placement’s scheme which provides exceptional students with the opportunity to carry out a paid summer research placement at the University.

Eligibility

Only students in the top 8% of their department who are currently on to gain a 1st class degree are invited onto the High Fliers scheme.  This is determined each year from the previous academic years marks. Students whose marks are not on the system by the end of the first week in August due to exceptional circumstances (resits and study abroad) should alert their department or the Faculty Marketing team if they feel they may qualify for the High Fliers scheme.

Opportunities for Industrial Partners

The High Fliers Summer Placement Scheme offers these excellent students, all of whom have a first class grade average and are in an intermediate year of their BEng/MEng, the opportunity to undertake a research project between June and September.

Projects last for a duration of 6 to 10 full-time weeks, and are supervised by representatives from the Faculty’s Research Divisions or from Industry.
