Year Out In Practice

The Department normally expects entrants to the Architecture Diploma course to have done between 6 - 12 months of professional practice experience - in an architect's office or in part of the building industry where they are deemed to be gaining good experience.

Students graduating from BArch or MEng are encouraged to find jobs in the UK or abroad.  The Department maintains a Year Out area on the intranet for year out students which can be accessed via the portal .  This includes a list of practices advertising jobs available, listing employers in previous years and additional useful information to assist students undertaking this part of their training.

Students are required to maintain PEDR sheets recording their practice experience by registering on the RIBA Professional Education and Development website .  The PEDR site also contains additional useful advice for the year out student.

Year Out students are registered as 'fourth year' students and remain linked to the Department by email and by this website and are encouraged to return for three recall days through the year if they are in the UK.  Where practical, representatives of the Department visit students in their offices and students will be asked to complete a short evaluation of their work experience.

It seems that almost all architecture departments operate a Year Out so it is possible to switch institutions for the diploma/part 2 - there is a balance - some of our first degree students move on, and we attract newcomers from other institutions.  Students are not required to return here for the diploma - but they will need the Year out PEDR sheets signing off by this Department to be accepted by almost all of the architecture schools/departments in the UK and in any case to register as an architect at the end of 7 years.
