Course Structure
All degree courses at Nottingham are modular. Modules are self-contained units of study that normally run for one semester. The majority of our modules are worth 10 credits and you will study modules totalling 120 credits in each year. You will also work on a large project in your final year.
Some of our degrees are available as both a 3 year BEng and a 4 year MEng. Both of these options will provide you with the same core skills but those taking the MEng will undertake a more substantial project with greater opportunity for specialisation and experience of research methods. Where both options are offered, you can make the final choice of 3 or 4 years towards the end of your second year of study.
Your personal tutor will advise you and guide you through the academic pathways available to you.
Assessment and Progression
Assessment at the end of each semester combines examinations, coursework, laboratory work and projects. Progression through a course is based on an annual appraisal covering all that year’s modules. Assessment isn’t all one-way: at the end of every module you’ll have the chance to fill in a questionnaire with your comments, helping us to ensure we are providing the best possible learning experience.
Industry Placements and Study Abroad
All our courses offer the opportunity to take up to a year out, studying abroad or working in industry.
We run a number of summer research internships where you can join us to help tackle real engineering problems at the forefront of knowledge and understanding.
Many of our students compete successfully for sought-after summer placements at major companies – often a great way to identify top career prospects.
Professional Recognition
All our undergraduate engineering courses are accredited by professional institutions, ensuring that quality is independently measured, and that material is up-to-date and relevant to the needs of modern commerce and industry.
