Expertise Summary

After graduating, Dr Williams worked for GEC Large Machines in Rugby in Electrical Machine Development. Following a period working in the voluntary sector in Birmingham, he began research into micro-hydro systems, often working in collaboration with the Intermediate Technology Development Group (now "Practical Action") and completed a PhD in this field in 1992. He has been involved in the development and dissemination of low-cost technologies for rural electrification, and has visited Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Peru in connection with this work. A project entitled "Modelling and design of pico propeller turbines for rural electrification" , funded by the Leverhulme Trust, was completed in summer of 2007 before transfering from Nottingham Trent University to the University of Nottingham. He lectures in the field of sustainable energy and is course director for the interdisciplinary MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering as well as the part-time MSc in Power Electronics, Machines & Drives.
