Biography

Richard Challis began his career as a Scholar of the English Electric Company in 1964 and graduated in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London, in 1967.

After a period with the company he returned to Imperial College and completed his PhD in the Applications of Engineering to Medicine in 1975. He worked as a Clinical Engineer at Guy's Hospital, London, where he specialised in instrumentation for intensive care monitoring and studies of intestinal motor patterns.

In 1978 he was invited to take up a position of Professor Visitante in the postgraduate engineering division of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. There he lectured in biomedical instrumentation and set up research and development programmes in medical ultrasonics and digital signal processing.

In 1980 he returned to the University of London as a lecturer in Bioengineering and Physiology. Later he became Professor of Engineering Physics at Keele University and in 1998 moved to Nottingham as Head of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

He has actively developed ideas and techniques which had their origins in biomedicine for new applications in industrial manufacturing processes. These have included wide bandwidth ultrasonic spectrometers for tracking themoset cure in the construction of automotive body shells, and for subsequent non-destructive testing (NDT) of the completed assembly. In recognition of this work he was awarded the Roy Sharp Prize for Research of the British Institute of Non-destructive Testing (BINDT).

More recently he developed ultrasonic techniques to track the state of particulate mixtures and to monitor dynamic changes such as crystallization, flocculation, and chemical reaction more generally.

He is currently working on a new programme of research into the application of ultrasonic techniques to detect, locate and characterise micro-porosity defects in aerospace composite materials. Over the years his research work has been strongly supported by the Research Councils and by major industries in many sectors.

Exploitation of many of his earlier research programmes is under way through a spin-off company, NDT Solutions Ltd, which was set up in 1998 by a group of his research associates.

Richard Challis was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2004.
