Teaching

The Department has achieved high teaching quality ratings in all subject areas.

In 1997, our Manufacturing Engineering and Management courses were the first in the University - and among the first in the country - to be awarded the maximum score of 24 points in the Independent Subject Review.

We welcome over 200 students to the Department each year and teaching is carried out by more than 50 academic staff. Additional teaching is given by experts from both inside and outside the University. Our staff's wide-ranging experience means we can offer an unusually broad range of specialist options for the third and fourth years of degree courses.

Lectures and laboratory classes take place in well-equipped facilities that have recently been redeveloped. Close attention to student support and welfare is fundamental to the way we do things. Each student is assigned a personal tutor with whom they will have regular tutorials and discussions throughout their course.

For students who want to start with a broad introduction to a range of engineering disciplines and then focus in a particular area at a later stage, we have introduced an Integrated Engineering programme. The first year of the programme covers Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Management. In the second year you have the flexibility to progress to one of the Department's other degree courses to make this your chosen specialist degree.

Assessment & Progression

Projects form an important part of your learning, because they help you acquire and improve theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as developing organisational, time-management and team-working skills.

Assessment of most modules is carried out by a mixture of coursework and examinations. Written and oral reports may also be used.

Professional Recognition

Four-year MEng courses are the main route to the professional engineering qualification of Chartered Engineer. The MEng and BEng honours degree courses are all accredited by the appropriate professional organisations. Undoubtedly an excellent foundation for careers in engineering and management, they also provide a range of skills that can lead to careers in all areas of industrial, commercial and public activity.

The Department has the highest reputation with graduate employers, and many target us directly for recruitment. Many of our past graduates are now in senior positions in major companies world-wide. A number of our graduates also stay on at Nottingham to undertake research degrees.

Selection

Applicants should apply through UCAS. Normally offers are made after attending an interview, although candidates who live a long distance from Nottingham may receive direct offers.

Interview Days are held regularly throughout the year, giving you the chance to spend a day at the University finding out about the opportunities on campus and in the Department.

The Department is happy to accept applications from students who wish to defer their entry - in fact we encourage it if you're taking time out to gain industrial experience or any other kind of constructive activity.
