Biography

Associate Professor Andrew Spowage has had a diverse career, working for several prestigious universities, companies and governmental bodies around the world. Prior (re)-joining The University of Nottingham he spent over a decade in the aerospace and manufacturing sectors working on over 100 industrially facing projects. These projects ranged for small short trouble shooting assignments to major international applied research projects, the largest of which had a team of over 100 people and budget of 21 million GBP.

Andrew is a Fellow of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), UK and the Institute of Materials Malaysia (IMM) and a member of several other learned societies. He is a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council, UK and a Chartered Scientist with the Science Council, UK as well as a certified six Sigma Black Belt. Dr Spowage is actively involved with the local branches' of both the IOM3 and IMM as a council member and currently coordinates the CEng interviews on behalf of IOM3 in Malaysia.

Associate Professor Andrew Spowage research activities are all industrially facing and aim to address real world issues. Andrew has published extensively in his two primary research area (Materials Characterisation and Testing & Engineering Management) and worked on a wide range of projects. Dr Andrew currently supervisors 4 PhD students and has supervised 3 others to graduation in top 100 ranged universities. Dr Spowage is currently the director of studies for the department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering at the Universities Malaysia Campus. The department, one of the largest on the campus has an impressive reputation for both teaching and research, and is staffed by 21 full-time and 4 part-time academics a holds responsibility little less than 400 students.

Research Summary

Dr Spowage has two research areas:

1) The charaterisation and testing of materials. In this area Dr Spowage focuses on the application of materials characterisation and testing techniques for process improvement, failure analysis, alloy development and performance assessment.

2) Project Management & Engineering. In this area Dr Spowage leverages on his experience of working on well over 100 industrial and applied research projects to develop and improve the methods of managing research, industrial and in particular collaborative projects
