Current Research

Dr. Mao's research interests include wind energy (e.g. wind resource assessment, optimal layout of wind farms, coupling of meso and micro scale simulations), optimal flow control and optimal design, turbomachinery and fluid & structure interactions, by means of analytical modelling and high-fidelity numerical simulations. Over the past two years, he has been PI of grants over £1M from EPSRC, EPCC, H2020 and a variety of wind energy and oil industries. He is also CoI of a Marie Curie RISE project (TESTBED, €882K) and a Newton Grant (£100K).

Future Research

Dr. Mao is always keen on supervising talented PhD students with background in aerospace, mathematics, mechanics or mechanical engineering. The proposed PhD topics include:

1) Optimal shape design using adjoint based CFD techniques;

2) The control of floating wind turbines based on the simulation of wave & wind interaction;

3) Turbine cooling by injecting coolant from a porous surface;

4) Thrust generation induced by the bending of flexible bodies;

5) Reduction of turbulent friction drag on aircraft wings by plasma actuation;

6) Deformation and oscillation of elongated structures (e.g. bridge, mooring line, oil riser) induced by fluid flow.

The Faculty of Engineering and the University of Nottingham provide a number of full studentships for home and international students. If you are interested in any of these projects, please write to him with a full CV.
