Biography

Mark Gillott is a Professor of Sustainable Building Design and a member of the Buildings, Energy and Environment research group, with over 20 years' experience in low carbon sustainable energy technologies and sustainable building design.

He is the research and project manager for the multi-award winning Creative Energy Homes low/zero carbon housing project, which incorporates an electricity micro-grid which utilises community energy stores and demand side management technologies.

Professor Mark Gillott holds the post of Chair in Sustainable Building Design at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, University of Nottingham. He has over 20 year's teaching experience in low carbon energy technologies and sustainable building design.

Current Research

Prof Gillott was an investigator on a long list of research projects, including three 'Transforming Energy Demand through Digital Innovation, TEDDI' EPSRC research projects (Wi-Be, C-AWARE and Multiscale Modelling to maximise Demand Side Management). He was the principal investigator on the E.ON International Research Initiative Project 'SWITCH - Smart Wireless Integrated Technology Control in Homes' which investigated consumer acceptance, appliance/behaviour modelling and demand-side management scenarios utilising smart home controls. He has undertaken further building/community energy management research through his role as an investigator on the E.ON funded 'Second Life Vehicle Battery Utilisation for Community Energy Storage' project and the Innovate UK funded projects ASSEMBLE and EMPower. He has extensive experience in the monitoring and evaluation of buildings (e.g. Technology Strategy Board Performance Evaluation of Buildings Programme 'Green Street' project).

He is currently an investigator on several projects, including the EU H2020 Project SENSIBLE, Storage-Enabled Sustainable Energy for Buildings and Communities, on the EU funded 'Transitioning towards Urban Resilience and Sustainability' TURAS, on the Innovate UK funded Project SCENe (Sustainable Community Energy Networks), the ETI funded SCENIC.

Future Research

I welcome enquiries from potential PhD candidates from Home, EU and international countries who are interested in the following research areas: Sustainable building design, renewable energy, local energy systems, community energy, energy storage, building performance evaluation, energy/behaviour modelling and monitoring, urban resilience, smart buildings, low carbon technologies.
