If you are applying for admission to a full-time first degree course (even if you already hold a first degree), you must apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Information about applying is available on the UCAS website at www.ucas.com.
Pre-Application
We recommend you start researching and prioritising your choice of university at least 18 months before you would start university. Try to be organised, look at university’s websites, request an undergraduate prospectus, and check entry requirements (remember that prospectuses are printed up to a year in advance so check the website for changes). The UCAS website also has lots of useful information you should read. Attend as many open days as possible. For students coming to Nottingham from abroad check with the university to see if one of their representatives will be in your area for you to meet. You should also see what scholarships might be available either from the university or other funding bodies eg charities, employers, private sponsors etc
When to apply
Your application should reach UCAS between 1 September and 15 January for entry in the following September. When writing to The University about your application always state your name and address, as given on your application form, your UCAS number and the code and name of the course for which you are applying.
The final deadline for Home/EU and international applications is 30 June. However EU and international students need to be aware that the application deadline for UK students is 15 January, therefore due to the competitive nature of many courses, it is advisable for students to apply by 15 January for equal consideration.
Entry Requirements
Applicants to degree programmes will normally be expected to have studied at least three subjects at AS level and three subjects to A’ level. Details of the specific subject requirements can be found on the relevant course information on Course List.
All conditional offers will still ordinarily be made on the basis of three full A’ levels (not including general studies) and students will only be required to have achieved a pass in the fourth subject, if taken. The grade achieved in any fourth subject may assume significance if you have narrowly failed to achieve the specified grades at A’ level.
In exceptional instances, we may also consider applicants offering two A’ levels plus three AS level subjects. In such instances, specified grades will be required in all five components.
We also welcome and encourage applicants with qualifications other than A’ levels, including BTECs, Access and Foundation courses, European and International Baccalaureates as well as equivalent overseas qualifications to apply. Applications from students taking the Advanced Diploma in Engineering will be assessed individually and offers will be made to students who are taking either an A’ level in mathematics, OCR Level 3 Certificate or modules of equivalent content in the Diploma.
International students whose first language is not English must have an appropriate level in an approved test, i.e. IELTS (overall score of 6.0 with no less than 5.0 in any element) or TOEFL (paper based 550 with a minimum score of 4.0 in the written element; computer version 213 with no less than 4.0 Essay Rating).
Reviewing your application
Once we receive your application from UCAS, our admissions team reviews it and makes a decision based on your application, the entry requirements for the course and your personal statement. You will start to receive decisions from the universities you put down on your form. Some universities (including Nottingham) will invite you to attend an interview. Once you have received those decisions, you have to decide which would be your first and second choices of university.
