The School of English congratulates Honorary Lecturer, Jon McGregor on the publication of his new collection of short stories, This Isn’t The Sort Of Thing That Happens To Someone Like You (Bloomsbury). The stories are all set in Lincolnshire and draw on the landscape to create a tense, unsettling atmosphere.
The book received a wonderful review from The Guardian, which commented on its ‘remarkable ventriloquism and genre-hopping playfulness’ and said, ‘McGregor has clearly thought hard about the order of the stories in this collection and […] the narrative tempo of the individual stories feeds through into the rhythm of the book as a whole.’
Another review in The Independent described the author's writing as 'so distinctive that it becomes hard to compare to another. There is a precision and a poetry to his prose. Life, inner and outer, is so meticulously dissected that events appear to happen in slow motion.'
Jon will next be visiting the School in March to give a lecture entitled ‘a short talk about the short story’.
