Research Topic

The minor and field-names of Nottinghamshire.

Research Summary

My project will consist of the collation of evidence of minor and field-names in Nottinghamshire from sources including Tithe Awards, Enclosure Awards, local and estate maps and documents from various collections, and the White Book of Southwell. My original dataset will be considered in its regional context, and will add detail to our knowledge of the landscape of Nottinghamshire from the Brittonic period onwards, including information on land use pre- and post-inclosure. I also hope to use an interdisciplinary approach to answer questions relating to the population of the area, from the ethnicities present to the languages spoken to the industry, economy and wealth of the county.
