Summarised below are the School scholarship and funding opportunities for Research Students in 2012/13.
The Arts and Humanities Research Council funds tuition fees and a full annual stipend (paid monthly) for a limited number of students applying for research studentship.
The Research Councils are the main source of government funding for postgraduate study. For full details, you should also go to the AHRC website.
In the first instance, all potential applicants must contact the School of English to confirm their intention to apply for an AHRC award.
Students interested in applying for AHRC funding will need to contact Lydia Wallman, PG Administrator as soon as possible and complete an AHRC application form available from the Graduate School website.
Referees will be sent a reference form when the student makes an application for a place to study at the University of Nottingham. These references will be used for both their application for a place at the University and for their funding application, so no additional references need to be supplied for your AHRC application. For either current students, or those applicants who have deferred their application from last year, the reference form is available to download from the Graduate School website.
The final deadline for applications is 12.00 noon on 22 February 2012. Applicants for funding must hold an offer of a place to study at the University of Nottingham and have already provided two academic references, via the university online application system. The offer can be conditional or unconditional. Offers for funding will be confirmed by the Graduate School by early May 2012.
If you have any queries concerning the AHRC awards please contact english-postgrad@nottingham.ac.uk or telephone on 0115 846 7286 .
2. Postgraduate Teaching Fellowships
The School will be awarding two Teaching Fellowships from September 2012. Applications are invited from potential doctoral students who wish to work in any area of English in which we can offer supervision.
Funding
The Teaching Fellowships cover the cost of postgraduate HEU tuition fees for up to three years (£3,825) and will in addition pay an annual maintenance grant (approximately £13,600), all subject to satisfactory progress.
Terms of the Award
The Teaching Fellowships have been designed to provide an alternative way to study and part fund a PhD. By offering an integrated programme of research supervision, teacher training, and teaching experience, the scholarships aim to provide students with the full range of skills.
Students will be:
-
assigned a PhD supervisory team for their research, whom they will meet on a regular basis
-
assigned a teaching mentor
-
required to attend a programme of courses provided by the Graduate School to support postgraduate students who teach
-
assisted by a programme of peer observation of their teaching
-
required to teach at undergraduate level in the School of up to 6 hours per week by the final year of the Fellowship
Students must be able to demonstrate competence in teaching and progress in their research in order for the scholarship to be renewed.
Applying for a Teaching Fellowship
In order to apply, applicants must already have received an offer of a place on the Schools' PhD programme from The University.
Applicants must already hold a good honours degree (i.e. 2:1) in English (or a cognate discipline, joint or combined honours degree including English) and must be either studying for, or have completed, a Masters degree. Applicants whose first language is not English must achieve an overall score on the British Council IELTS test of at least 7.0; or the equivalent TOEFL score.
Prior teaching experience is not necessary and these scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and assessment at interview for candidates' suitability for an academic career in research and teaching.
Please note that the scholarship will not normally be awarded to students in receipt of full funding from the AHRC or other bodies and may be re-assigned to another candidate if the successful candidate subsequently wins such funding.
Applicants should complete a Teaching Fellowship Application Form (Word) and return this to the School of English by 12 March 2012.
Further guidance regarding references is given on the application form.
For further details, informal enquiries and to initiate discussion of research topics with potential supervisors, please contact our Postgraduate Administrator, Lydia Wallman.
A fund set up in memory of the late Professor Christine E Fell allows the School to award up to two scholarships (normally a fee-reduction worth £1,000) each year to a new or continuing postgraduate student (MA or PhD) working in any of the following areas:
-
Old English and Anglo-Saxon studies
-
Old Norse and Viking studies
-
Name-studies
-
History of English

All continuing students, and all applicants for entry in 2012 who have applied by 12 March 2012 will be considered automatically for a scholarship and applicants are not required to complete a separate application form. The successful candidate will be informed by letter in June 2012. The scholarship will not normally be awarded to students in receipt of full funding from the AHRC or other bodies and may be re-assigned to another candidate if the successful candidate subsequently wins such funding.
The fund also allows the School to make occasional small grants to registered students in the above areas to support their academic research.
