Teaching Opportunities

Teaching Opportunities for Postgraduate Research Students

The School of English offers opportunities for some of our Research Students to teach at undergraduate level. Research students normally apply to be a part-time teacher from their second year of PhD registration at The University of Nottingham onwards.

There are also opportunities for research students to apply for a Postgraduate Teaching Fellowship.  The Postgraduate Teaching Fellowship is a School funded scholarship and is for HEU tuition fees scholarship and full stipend for three years.

Research Students who wish to teach are selected for teaching through a process of presentation and interview in the School.  Selection is subject to the agreement of the research students' Supervisors.

Support and Training

Research Students who teach are supported through all aspects of module teaching by staff already convening and teaching on the module and by a training programme run by the University’s Professional Development Unit.  New part-time teaching staff must attend the following training courses provided by Professional Development:

  • A Practical Look at Core Teaching Skills
  • Marking and Assessment

A system of peer observation within the School provides the opportunity for ongoing feedback and discussion of teaching.

There is also a member of academic staff who is appointed as the Part-Time Teaching Staff Co-ordinator in the School and who holds a meeting at the beginning of the academic year to discuss any concerns and questions.

Expectations

Newly appointed part-time teaching staff normally teach seminars or workshops to first-year undergraduate students.

In addition to delivering these direct contact hours, the part-time teaching staff are expected to:

  • attend the part-time teachers’ induction meeting held in the School at the beginning of the year;
  • read the section on the staff intranet for part-time teachers and observe the standards of good practice
  • attend further training sessions run by Professional Development as required by the School (normally two half-day courses in the first year of teaching are required, but part-time teaching assistants can usually be funded to take advantage of further training opportunities if they so wish
  • attend lectures for the module on which they are teaching;
  • prepare work for the seminars they are teaching
  • be available to students for consultation at an appointed office hour every week plus during assessment periods;
  • allocate time to complete their assessment duties;
  • attend meetings organised by the Module Convenor as appopriate.

Application procedures

Information about the application process will be circulated to current Research students by Mari Hughes.  Interviews held on the morning of Tuesday, 8 May 2012.  The deadline for applications will be Thursday, 3 May 2012.  Applicants must include the following:

  • a CV
  • two written references
  • permission from their supervisors
  • applicants will be asked to being their passport on the day of interview to provide evidence of their eligibility to work in the UK

Applicants who are also being interviewed for a Postgraduate Teaching Fellowship will not be required to attend a second interview in the School.
