Facilities

Postgraduate Facilities

The School recognises how important it is for students to feel at home in the School and the University.

School social and work space

The School has a common room on the ground floor of the Trent Building for all taught students in the School.  This provides flexible work/study space for students throughout the year (from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm) and, with wireless access in the building, students can bring them laptops and work in this social/work study space.

Arts Graduate Centre facilities

The Arts Graduate Centre (AGC) is part of the Graduate School. It was set up in March 2008 to provide Faculty-specific training and support for postgraduates and early-career researchers. The AGC is managed by Sarah Kerr and Rebekah Smith McGloin (both postgraduate alumni from the Faculty), is steered by a student users' group and assisted in its work by student interns from across the Faculty.

The Faculty of Arts also provides dedicated work space for all MA students in the Arts Graduate Centre.  The Graduate Centre is located in the same building as the School of English (and above the Trent Coffee Bar!) and has networked pcs and wireless access for laptops.

The Arts Graduate Centre Reading Room is full of comfy chairs and sofas and regularly has newspapers and journals. There are also books donated by academics in the Faculty, and it is a bookcrossing point too! It is a great place to come and have your lunch, or read the newspapers in a relaxing atmosphere over a coffee.

The Arts Graduate Centre offers support for students interested in developing their own ideas in the form of seminars, conferences, events, and socials.
A part of the AGC budget is devolved to the Users' Group for an ongoing programme of socials.

Researcher Portal

Every postgraduate student in the Faculty is a member of the Arts Graduate Centre and therefore has automatic access to a Researcher portal. The portal has been developed by PhD studenst in the Faculty with the aid of Faculty-wide feedback from a student focus group and enables you to:

  • sign up for AGC events
  • see a calendar of events that are on across the whole Faculty
  • post and read notices about forthcoming events and conferences
  • search a database of research students in the Faculty to seek out interdisciplinary contacts
  • see what else is going on in the Faculty and beyond.

Graduate School

The Graduate School offers social and study space for the postgraduate community in the University of Nottingham. The Graduate School also administers travel prizes, library bursaries etc. and aims to support the postgraduate research community.  Further information is available on the Graduate School Website.

There are also facilities for MA students in the Graduate School located in the Trent Building.  The Graduate School has social space and networked pcs for postgraduate students to use. In addition, there are dedicated meeting rooms and seminar rooms that can be booked by all postgraduate students. The Graduate School is located in the same building as the Arts Graduate Centre and the School of English so our students are able to benefit from both facilities being less than a minute apart!

Library Facilities

The University libraries have extensive library holdings for students in English Studies. In particular, the University has holdings for research on DH Lawrence, medieval manuscripts, and the important Portland Literary Collection of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century manuscripts.

If you have any further queries concerning facilities for MA students in the School please email english-postgrad@nottingham.ac.uk

Postgraduate Students' Association (PGSA)

The PGSA is the representative body for all postgraduate students at the University, and all current postgraduate students including part-time are automatically members.

The aim of the PGSA is to make the postgraduate experience at Nottingham as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. They run social events throughout the year, organise sports teams, look after welfare issues, and represent postgraduate interests on University committees.
