MA in Creative Writing

MA in Creative Writing

The School of English, renowned for its excellence in research and teaching, has launched a new MA in Creative Writing.

The MA programme in Creative Writing blends elements of analysis and practice, paying close attention to the details of the writing process.  Students advance as writers by acquiring the skills and techniques used by published authors, with particular emphasis on the skill of reading as a writer.  As a result, they develop control over their own writing process, including the parts played by influence, rewriting, the creative use of source material, and the relation between the particular and the general in their written work.  There is a strong emphasis on the realities of the published writer, with guest sessions throughout the year allowing students to meet writers and professionals in the publishing trade.  In addition, students are encouraged to attend and take part in Nottingham's lively writing culture, which offers many events throughout the year.

Submission of Written Work for Masters in Creative Writing

All applicants to the Masters in Creative Writing will be required to submit an example of their written work. Applicants who have applied on-line and who are asked by the University to supply written work, will receive full details of how to submit their work electronically.

The Masters in Creative Writing welcomes writers of poetry, fiction, or a combination of the two. In reading the writing samples, we are looking for work that indicates that its author would be able to succeed on the course. There is no restriction on the subject matter of the writing sample. We only require that it is your own work.

Please send EITHER:
Up to 5000 words of prose fiction (this could be one story, a group of stories, or an extract from a longer piece).
OR
Up to 10 poems

We look forward to reading your work.

Course Structure

Full time students normally complete the course within one year; part-time students must take between 24-36 months to complete.  The MA consists of taught modules totaling 120 credits (which are taken during the autumn and spring semesters) and a 60 credit dissertation module (which is taken during the summer period).  Full time students normally take 60 credits of taught modules in each semester; part time students normally take 30 credits.

All modules will be taught by experts in the field.  All students will work with an individual supervisor for their creative dissertation

The Masters in Creative Writing includes modules in fiction and poetry. Students may either specialise in one of the two forms or can opt for a combination of fiction and poetry modules.

In the workshop modules students test out their draft work through supportive critical discussion and feedback. As the course progresses, the tutors encourage students to take more of a lead in these sessions, drawing on their increasing confidence and experience. The other modules feature group discussion of a range of texts, and require students to produce original work informed by the techniques required in class.

The course structure below reflects the modules that will be taught and assessed in the academic year 2011/12.
