Louise Chamberlain
Masters in English Literature
I'm currently studying the MA in English Literature on a part-time basis. I came to the University of Nottingham because of the English department has a strong focus on Modernism and Contemporary Literature, and this is relevant to my own research interests. Prior to coming to Nottingham I completed my undergraduate degree in English at the University of Birmingham. I then worked for Nottingham City Council Children's Services for a year, and I continue to do so, part-time.
The MA in English Literature is enjoyable for me as it allows for freedom in individual research yet also has a structured element, which is providing me with a framework to support that research. I have been taking part in wider activities that the department offers: I am active in the Contemporary Fiction Reading Group and the Feminist Reading Group, for example. The Graduate School also offers training and social events, which are essential for part-time students like myself in order to integrate within the community.
My proposed dissertation topic is 'Alice Oswald and Anne Sexton: the influence of feminist criticism on the interpretation of women’s poetry'. I aim to explore the role of feminist criticism and contemporary reviews in the interpretation of Alice Oswald and Anne Sexton's poetry and how their construction of voice and persona influences this, in order to establish alternative approaches to their poetry. I am particularly interested in the relationship and interaction between the public and private and its representation in poetry, which is also a dimension featured in feminist thought. In the future I wish to extend similar ideas to contemporary women's fiction.
Eleni Ponirakis
Masters in Viking and Anglo-Saxon Studies
I am doing my MA part time as a very mature student, having done my undergraduate degree here 20 years ago. I am lucky enough to have been given the opportunity by my school, where I am a full time secondary teacher of English, to do this MA.
I have done a good many things in the twenty years between graduating and now, including working in a bookshop and teaching in France. In all that time I enjoyed Old English and Viking history and texts as a hobby and have waited a long time to get back into study. It's not easy as a mum in full time employment, but it is well worth it. I am doing a combined masters in Anglo Saxon and Viking studies and it is as exciting as I had hoped. I love the challege of trying to master these languages and learning so much about the significance of these rich and varied texts; it is a glimpse into a world that is very different to our own in some ways and in others, touchingly similar.
One of the great things about studying these subjects at Nottingham is the feeling of being part of a close community of scholars and being given such excellent support and guidance by people who are leaders in their field.
I am hoping to do my dissertation on the representation of experiences of the sea in Old English and Norse literature.

Masters in English Literature
I am currently studying the MA in English Literature. I completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology with English at the University of Chester, and chose to come to Nottingham University to complete to study for the MA in order to study part - time while living at home. I enjoy the freedom of the course, but also the knowldge that there is support available when needed. My proposed dissertation topic is the portrayal of both Satan and Eve in John Milton's Paradise Lost, with a particular interest in reader responses to both characters. In the future I would like to go on to study for a Phd, with an eventual aim to become a Lecturer in English Literature.

Masters in Theatre Research
Studying for the Theatre Research MA enabled me to pursue my passion for Young People's Theatre both academically and professionally. I made full use of the University's links with Nottingham Playhouse and Lakeside Arts Centre, which not only enhanced my research into an often academically under-represented area of theatre practice but also allowed me to make the professional contacts with whom I have continued to work since graduation.
