We are looking for single and joint honours students with strong academic records and those with a genuine interest in studying English.
If you are applying for admission to a full-time first degree course (even if you already hold a first degree), you must apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Your application should reach UCAS between 1 September and 15 January When writing to the University about your application always state your name and address, as given on your application form, your UCAS number and the code and name of the course for which you are applying.
This section of your UCAS form tells us most about you, so we would like you to be as specific and detailed as you can. Tell us about something of what you have read, and show us that you have thought about it and have an opinion. Make sure your writing is accurate; a well-written personal statement makes a good impression, whatever you have to say. Tell us about yourself and how you spend your time outside your studies. We would like to see that you are a student who can work hard, be self-motivating and make the best use possible of the opportunities this course might have to offer you.
Applicants who meet the basic admissions requirements for the BA English with Creative Writing will be required to submit an example of their written work. Full details of how to submit this work electronically will be given by the University Admissions Office. Applicants will be required to submit up to 1,500 words of fiction or 100 lines of poetry before any offer is made for a place on the course. The written work is essentially looking for ‘promise’ and for this reason the only restriction is that the work should be original.
If you apply to us having already completed your A levels, your application will be considered in exactly the same way as those from candidates with predicted grades. Please tell us something about your gap year activities in your UCAS personal statement, and how you feel these may contribute to your university experience.
From 6 April 2012, to secure a tier 4 visa, international students will need to show living expenses of £800 per month - a total of £7200 in their bank accounts, as opposed to £5600 previously (£600 per month).
