BA Honours English Language and Literature
  • Do you enjoy reading and analysing novels, stories and poetry?
  • Are you interested in finding out more about the historical and cultural contexts for your favourite literary texts?
  • Have you ever wondered how language works, how we learn languages, or how languages change over time?

If you've answered 'yes' to these questions, English Language and Literature may be the degree for you.

This course provides a thorough understanding of the historical range of English Literature and the development of the language.  

 

First Year

In your first year, you are introduced to a broad range of disciplines within English studies, including some drama and medieval studies alongside the core areas of English literature and modern English language. You can also choose from a range of subsidiary modules. You will take five core modules in the following:

  • Modern English Literature
  • Medieval Language and Literature
  • English Language and Applied Linguistics 
  • Drama and Performance
  • Academic Community

Taught by Personal Tutors in small tutorial groups, Academic Community aims to help you with the transition from school or college to university. You will be introduced to key issues of being a university student in general and the discipline of English Studies in particular. It will also develop your skills of self-reflective writing, presenting and developing an argument, and handling sources and evidence appropriately.

 

Second Year

In year two you will take core modules in English Language and Applied Linguistics, and Modern English Literature. You will also have a choice of lliterary period options. 

You may also, if you wish, opt to include a core module in the area of Medieval Language and Literature or Drama and Performance. 

 

Final Year

In your final year, you will divide your time equally between Language and Literature, choosing from a range of specialist options in each of these areas.

You will also take a compulsory dissertation on a language and/or literary topic of your choice. If you chose to study a drama or medieval studies module in your second year, you may opt to continue this strand by choosing a third-year module in the same area.
