The School of English shares the University’s commitment to increasing the opportunities available to undergraduate ‘Widening Participation’ students who wish to apply for our courses. We pay particular attention to applicants whose school or college is performing below the national average, and whose home area (as denoted by their postcode) is known to be socio-economically disadvantaged. Applicants in this category will be considered for a place despite having predicted A level grades that fall slightly below our normal minimum A level requirements, and might expect to receive an offer a little lower than we would normally make. (For example, a widening participation applicant might apply to study Single Honours English with predicted A-level grades of ABB rather than the normal AAA-AAB, and be made an ABB offer.) To ensure that all successful applicants are able to work at the standard necessary to undertake our degree courses, the requirement for an A in A level English will not be waived. Applicants for Single Honours English will also be expected to have 4 Grade A's at GCSE.
