CRAL is an interdisciplinary research centre based within the School of English Studies at the University of Nottingham, dedicated to the description and understanding of language and discourse in different contexts and for different applications.
CRAL provides world-class facilities for applied linguistics research. This includes a state of the art corpus linguistics laboratory, eye-tracking equipment and lab space, and a number of unique language resources that have been developed at the centre.

CRAL has a diverse portfolio of outputs which include prestigious monographs, articles in international leading journals, presentations at international conferences in the field, and a number of language databases which make Nottingham an international leader in Applied Linguistics.
CRAL is one of the leading centres in Applied Linguistics internationally and attracts significant numbers of students at all levels. The MAs in Applied Linguistics and Literary Linguistics are amongst the largest in the school, and we have built up a thriving PGR community. Additionally, CRAL houses four interdisciplinary research groups. These include the Health Language Research Group (HLRG), the Bilingualism Research Group, Language in Professions and the Literary Linguistics Research Studio.
