ENDORSEMENT OF EPSRC GRANT APPLICATIONS BY THE ESR NETWORK
The ESR Network is being increasingly approached for endorsement
of grant applications being submitted to EPSRC. In order to be even-handed
and consistent in the way that the Network deals with such requests, the
following procedure has been put in place.
(1) A small working group of 8 members will deal electronically to consider
grant applications where an endorsement is sought from the Network. This
group comprises three industrial and three academic members of the Network,
together with Prof Tom Hyde as Network Chairman and Doug Warne as Network
co-ordinator.
Membership of the working group will be rotated among Network members on an annual basis.
(2) The remit for consideration of applications is:
(a) to comment on the relevance of the proposed research to the interests
and priorities of the Network
(b) to highlight any specific relevance to R&D strategies that may be
established or in formation by the Network
The Network will specifically avoid any commentary on the quality of the
proposed research or the suitability of the applicant; that is properly
a matter for EPSRC peer review. It may however choose to comment on the
paucity of research in a particular area and the importance of sustaining
an activity.
(3) The feedback to the applicant from the Network will be
drawn from the comments made by the working group and will be in the form
of a letter to the applicant, signed by Tom Hyde as Network chairman.
Should a grant application which has been endorsed by the network in this
way subsequently be approved and funded by EPSRC, the Principal Investigator
and any industrial partners will be invited to join the Network, if they
are not already members.
