A to Z of WasteThere are many different types of waste that the University produces, but much of it has the potential to be recycled or reused. The following guide lists how to dispose of items in order to maximise opportunities for reuse and recycling: A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y ZAAerosols = Empty aerosol cans can not be recycled on campus. Please contact the Estate Office Environment team if you have large quantities of aerosols to dispose of. BBatteries = Portable batteries can be taken to the battery collection points located in all libraries, Portland Building reception, Psychology Building foyer, L2 Stores, Arts Centre, Computer Science Building, Clinical Sciences Building and King's Meadow reception. Special collection can be arranged for large automotive or industrial batteries. Please contact the Estate Office Environment team. Books = Older edition text books can be donated to READ International (previously known as the Tanzania book club) - a student-run book reuse project. Books can also be donated to local charity shops. CCardboard = There are cardboard recycling facilities within most University buildings. Please flatten any boxes and leave them in the designated area to be collected by cleaning staff. Card can also be placed in University Bring Sites, On Street Recycling bins and in internal Mixed Recycling bins. CDs and DVDs = These can be placed in internal Mixed Recycling bins or in the plastics section of On Street Recycling bins or University Bring Sites. Please see CD, DVD and video recycling for contact details of reuse schemes and a free recycling service for confidential media. Chemicals = Please contact the Estate Office Environment team. Cling film (cellophane) = This needs to be disposed of in your refuse bin. Try using plastic containers to hold food. Clothes and textiles = These can be placed in the textile banks found at most Bring Sites. All donations are then collected by Planet Aid and sold to raise funds for the charity. Computer equipment = Please contact your PC disposal co-ordinator to arrange collection. It is now illegal for the University to send waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) direct to landfill; it should be collected separately to enable reuse and recovery of materials. A small proportion of the University's old computer equipment is given to charity. Confidential papers = Contact the Estate Office Helpdesk to arrange collection of the papers. They will be shredded securely and then recycled. D
Drink cans = Drink and food cans can be recycled at Bring Sites situated around campus and can also be placed in On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins. EElectrical appliances (excluding computer equipment) = In most cases, you can return old electrical and electronic equipment free of charge by using suppliers’ or manufacturers’ take-back schemes. If you are unable to trace their take-back scheme, contact the Estate Office Helpdesk to arrange collection of the equipment. Please specify the approximate quantity. It is now illegal for the University to send waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) direct to landfill; it should be collected separately to enable reuse and recovery of materials. Envelopes = Envelopes can either be reused if in good condition or placed in paper recycling bins. They can also be recycled at Bring Sites or be placed in On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins. FFurniture = Good quality furniture, in a usable condition, can be collected and stored until needed for further use. Contact the Estate Office Helpdesk to arrange collection of the equipment. Please specify the approximate quantity. GGlass = Glass can be recycled at Bring Sites situated around campus. There are also glass recycling bins at many halls of residence. IInk cartridges = See Printer cartridges. MMagazines and catalogues = These can be recycled at Bring Sites situated around campus and can also be placed in On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins. Metal = A skip can be arranged to dispose of large amounts of metal. Please contact the Estate Office Environment team. Mobile phones = University mobile phones should be returned to Telephone Services in Law and Social Sciences Building, University Park, for recycling. For personal mobile phones, collect a freepost Envirofone envelope - recycling the phone raises funds for local charity Haywood House Cancer Care Trust. For more information on the Enviofone scheme click here. NNewspaper = Newspapers can be reused for packaging or recycled at Bring Sites. They can also be placed in On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins. OOil = This should be taken off site by the oil suppliers. P
Paper = Many offices have paper recycling bins. Paper can also be recycled at Bring Sites situated around campus or be placed in On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins. Plastic = Please contact the Estate Office Environment team to find out how to recycle large amounts of plastic waste. Plastic bottles = Plastic bottles can be recycled at Bring Sites, in On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins. Printer cartridges = Ink and toner cartridges from printers (not photocopiers) can be sent to the Post Room at King's Meadow in an envelope or box marked 'ink cartridges'. TTelephone directories = These can be placed in external paper recycling bins, On Street Recycling bins and internal Mixed Recycling bins, or taken to Bring Sites. VVideo tapes = These can be posted to a company for recycling. Please see CD, DVD and video recycling for contact details. WWood = A skip can be arranged to dispose of large amounts of wood.
