Tins and cans can be recycled at the Bring sites and can be placed into internal Mixed Recycling bins and On Street Recycling bins that are dotted around campus.
Recycling Process
Tins and Cans are placed into a recycling bin
They are then collected and separated manually between steel and aluminium
Aluminium cans are shredded and any colour coating is removed. It is then melted down in a giant furnace. This molten metal is then poured into casts and chilled to set. Each ingot contains around 1.6 million cans, and ingots are taken to mills and rolled into foil to make more cans.
Waste steel is melted down with iron ore and limestone. The liquid metal is poured into a mould and cooled. When cooled, the new steel is chopped into blocks.
