Research Assessment Exercise 2008.

The School is pleased to announce that it is the strongest unit of its type in the country in terms of 'research power’ rating: one that takes into account both quality of research and the number of research-active staff who made returns to the RAE. According to the Exercise, 25% of the School's returns were judged 4* or 'world-leading' in terms of originality, significance and rigour. A further 20% were of 3* quality ('internationally excellent').

AHRC Beyond Text award - ephemeral media

Dr Paul Grainge has been awarded a workshop grant in the AHRC's major 'Beyond Text' programme. Dr Grainge will co-ordinate two separate workshop events in summer 2009 that will examine the brief or 'ephemeral' media that exist beyond and between the films, television programmes, and radio broadcasts more commonly isolated for analysis. The two workshops will focus, respectively, on promotional ephemera such as logos, promos, trailers and channel idents and on user-generated ephemera found on the likes of YouTube. The workshop will bring together academics from a range of disciplines as well as those involved in making the kinds of media in question. The homepage for the workshop is
