Ideal for International Students
During the Foundation Year students study a range of subjects. For international students, the Foundation Year also provides a great opportunity to improve English language competence through language training whilst adapting to life at one of England’s top universities.
Language classes are also available before the start of the course for those students who need additional support. Depending upon the options you take, the Foundation Year will offer an approved entry route to most of the degree programmes in the academic Departments and Schools listed on our Engineering and Science Destination Pathways pages.
Different start dates for the Engineering Pathway
For the Engineering Pathway, there are two yearly intake opportunities, in January (H102) and September (H100). For the H102 course, students start in January and study through the year to the end of August. Please note that the Chemical Engineering route is only available starting in September each year.
For the Science pathway, CFG0, there is one entry point in September. Please note that the Science Foundation Year does not lead to undergraduate study in Pharmacy or Chemistry.
Alternative entry route
The Foundation Year is also suited to students who have taken A-level or equivalent examinations in subjects not normally considered for entry to engineering and/or science programmes. Applications from mature students are especially encouraged.
The Foundation Year is not intended for students who have tried to gain the normal Year One entry requirements and failed.
The foundation programme is particularly suitable for students who studied Maths at GCSE level and AS level but not A2 level.
