The Department of French and Francophone Studies is one of the largest French departments in the UK. We are therefore able to offer students specialist teaching across the range of French Studies: literature, film, media, visual culture, history, politics, intellectual history, linguistics and translation studies. In addition to Single Honours French, we are able to offer a wide range of degree courses combining the study of French with other languages and/or disciplines:

The Department has a strong reputation in teaching and research and all of its academic staff teach final year modules closely linked to their individual research. This means that you will be taught by lecturers who are enthusiastic about and committed to the modules they teach.
After a first year in which you will acquire a firm grounding in the skills and intellectual tools necessary for the rest of your degree, you will choose in the second and final years from an extensive range of specialist modules. A full list of our module options for 2010-11 is available here.
Language is taught in the first, second and final years of the degree through year-long core modules which are taken by all students. Our language teaching is supported by an experienced team of lecturers, language instructors and native French speakers (lectrices, lecteurs). A variety of language-learning resources for French and other modern languages are available in the School’s Language Centre.
The Department takes a flexible approach to options in the Year Abroad. You can apply to be an language assistant, study in a foreign university or find a work placement – or combine any of these. Please consult our Year Abroad website for more information. for more information.
