BSc in Healthcare Science
with and without a Foundation Year
The School of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health is offering 2 degree programmes:
-
BSc in Healthcare Science with a Foundation Year (UCAS Code B902)
-
BSc in Healthcare Science (UCAS Code B900)
Our innovative Healthcare Science degrees are designed for those with a broad interest in the medical sciences who want to experience working at the forefront of scientific research and practice. Healthcare and medical scientists work in a wide range of careers and are recognised for their skills, knowledge and expertise which span a wide range of disciplines within the NHS, in medical research, and with a diverse range of graduate employers across the private sector. Both degree programmes also provide a firm base from which to pursue further study in a variety of allied subjects, including graduate entry medicine.
Both courses are taught at the Medical School on the Royal Derby Hospital site in Derby, where students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a purpose built healthcare science laboratory, anatomy suite (equipped with models and pathology specimins and cadaveric material that is specially prosected to match teaching requirements), and clinical skills suite (equipped with a wide range of clinical skills equipment and training devices including mannequins that mimic respiratory, cardiac and alimentary symptoms and responses).
Students benefit from small class sizes and lecturers who can help them achieve their full potential. The presence of medical students enrolled in the School’s Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme and medical students on clinical rotations, make the Medical School at Derby a stimulating environment in which to study Healthcare Science.
These programmes are designed to widen access to higher education and medical and health sciences careers. Students are able to choose either a 4 year programme with an integrated foundation year (B902) or a 3 year programme (B900), depending upon their entry qualifications.
The 4 year BSc in Healthcare Science with a Foundation Year is is aimed at applicants who have A levels or equivalent, but not in science subjects (which is normally a requirement for those applying for a science course at university level).
The 3 year BSc in Healthcare Science is aimed at students who already have A levels in biology or chemistry.
