The broad research aims of the School are:

  • To generate new knowledge in order to improve understanding of human health and prioritised disease areas
  • To deliver new evidence based approaches to treatment of disease and injury which will translate into clinical practice

The School has a solid track record in:

  • clinical and health services research
  • laboratory-based research

Clinical and translational research, spanning molecular mechanisms through to clinical trials is funded by the research councils:

  • MRC, BBSRC
  • Wellcome Trust
  • National Institute of Health (NIHR) (USA)
  • Action Medical Research
  • Kidney Research UK
  • British Heart Foundation

The majority of the research, in partnership with Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, involves patients and human volunteers (tissue and blood samples, non-invasive and invasive study methods, clinical trials, mixed methods health services research).
