Profile
I am an Associate Professor within the Geographical Information Science research group of the School of Geography, at the University of Nottingham. I have a BSc in Geography from Durham University and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Nottingham. My research brings together interests in Physical Geography, Art, Computer Science as well as Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Specific areas of interest are:
- Landscape Visualisation: Lab and field-based landscape visualisation; Virtual and Augmented Realities; Interactive Spatial Multimedia; Explanatory metadata in visualisation.
- Geographic Representation Geographic/Artistic representations; Representing historic and cultural information; Representation issues in the natural environment especially terrain and rivers.
- Spatially Aware Computing: Context-aware visualisation; Lab-based Test Environments; Mobile Field Assistants.
- Feature extraction: strategies for extraction knowledge from remotely sensed data; Evaluation of Digital Surface Models for environmental modelling; Data conversion algorithms.
My teaching interests lie mainly in the areas of geographic representation, visualisation and computer programming. I am Director of the MSc in Geographical Information Science. I am site manager for the Nottingham arm of the teaching initiative SPLINT (SPatial Literacy IN Teaching). This is a HEFCE-funded Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). I am also on the management group of the Visual Learning Lab which is also a CETL. I was local chair of GIS Research UK (GISRUK) 2006, which was hosted in the School of Geography between April 5th and 7th 2006. |
