General admissions requirements
You must hold a good 2.1 or equivalent undergraduate honours degree. Normally, you should also have a high level of previous training in geography or a related discipline or have completed a relevant Masters degree.
In support of your application you should supply:
-
2 academic references
-
A transcript of your marks from your previous degree course(s)
-
IELTS/TOEFL certificate, if applicable – see separate page for International Students
-
In addition to a completed application form and supporting documents, please send a statement (500-1000 words) of your research proposal, which should include aims and methods, sources and the location of the proposed research.
Admissions procedure
Before making an application you should satisfy yourself that advanced study in your chosen field can be undertaken at the School of Geography.
Acceptance of any applicant will be dependent on specialist supervision being available. Please consult our research web pages to give you an idea of the types of research done by the School. If we cannot supervise your topic, we will decline your application regardless of its academic merit.
Admissions deadline
You may begin your PhD at any time, but most students begin in late September. Generally, it is best to apply no later than six months before you intend to start. If you will be seeking funding, it may be useful to apply in the Autumn or Winter previous to the academic year when you intend to start, as most funding decisions are made in the Spring/Summer.
