AHRC research grant awarded to Professor Stephen Daniels through ‘Enhancing the Role of Arts and Humanities Perspectives on Environmental Values and Change’ call.
Stephen Daniels has been awarded £100,000 for the project ‘Bringing Landscape to Life: Environmental Histories of Sheringham Park, 1812-2012’ which will run from March until the end of August 2012.
The project will explore the environmental histories of the landscape of Sheringham Park in Norfolk, designed by the landscape gardener Humphry Repton in 1812. The park is one of the few surviving examples of his work and the one which Repton proclaimed his “most favourite work”. On the occasion of the bicentenary of the design, the main aim will be to address current debates about the implications of environmental change for the restoration, management and interpretation of publically accessible designed landscapes of high cultural value.
It is one of six projects to be awarded funding nationally and will involve Stephen Daniels and Lucy Veale from the School of Geography Nottingham working in partnership with colleagues at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the National Trust who own and manage Sheringham Park. As well as an academic paper on the subject, the six-month project will also include a workshop at UEA and a small exhibition at Sheringham Park in the summer.
