Research Summary

Jonathan is Academic Champion of the University's Integrating Global Society Research and Knowledge Transfer Priority Group, and Professor of Economic Geography.

He has over 100 publications in leading internationally acclaimed management, geography, urban studies, migration studies and social sciences journals and edited books, and is the writer of several edited and authored books. He is currently co-writing a research monograph on, The Globalization of the Executive Search Industry (Routledge: Studies in International Business and World Economy Series).

For over a decade his research has investigated the globalization strategies of knowledge-intensive professionals and global professional service firms, particularly focusing on:

  • The internationalization of globalizing accounting, advertising, executive search, investment banking and legal firms
  • Highly-skilled international labour migration, transnational working practices and the global mobility of talent (expatriation and business travel) in professional service firms
  • The strategy of global executive search firms in Europe
  • Private banking and the wealth management industry
  • Globalization and world cities
  • Global talent and the competitiveness of the City of London and Singapore's financial district

His research has been presented at international conferences in Canada, the USA, mainland Europe, the Middle East, India, China, Singapore and Australia. Research has been funded by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council and charities (e.g. British Academy, Leverhulme Trust, Nuffield Foundation), and sources from mainland Europe (e.g. The Anglo-German Foundation) and the USA (e.g. Alfred Sloan Foundation). Jonathan holds Visiting and Honorary Professorships at the University of Gent, Belgium, and the University of Otago, New Zealand, respectively, and has been the recipient of prestigious Visiting Fellowships at the National University of Singapore, University of Otago and University of Western Sydney, Sydney.

In January 2012, Jonathan was appointed an Associate Editor of Global Networks: a Journal of Transnational Affairs (Wiley-Blackwell).
