Environment and Society

Humans are unique in both their impact on the environment and their understanding of that impact. Research of the interface of society and the environment in various geographical contexts and scales, in both developed and developing worlds, can clarify problems and help identify solutions reflecting societal needs and stewardship. Work in this research theme has been focused on four key areas (please follow the links for more detailed information):

• Sustainable Rural and Urban Land Management  (including environmental valuation and ecosystem goods and services)
• Farming, Food and Forestry
• The Sustainable Use and Management of Water
• Health and Environment

The work is funded by many organisations including ESRC, EPSRC, NERC, Environment Agency, the EU, Defra, Natural England, European Environment Agency and industry. Much of the work of this group is conducted through, or in collaboration with the Centre for the Environment and the Centre for Environmental Management .

Members of the theme have produced a number of key policy reports, and individuals act as advisors to UK Government agencies (EA/Defra, DFiD, CSL), international agencies and development organisations (UN, World Bank, EEA, the EU, SDC and in collaboration with Universitas 21 ).

As of July 2009, 17 research students are currently associated with the research theme, and since 2001 another 16 have been awarded a PhD in this area of work. Being mindful of changing priorities, our research is now broadening to encompass knowledge exchange the transition concept, and the Group is active in interdisciplinary research within the University and beyond this, through Universitas 21 , and in partnership with the Third Sector.
