Geosciences
This theme is leading research in earth and environmental systems over a range of spatial and temporal scales. We investigate patterns and processes within the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere to make inferences about past, present and future change. We are pioneering cutting-edge technologies for geoscience data collection, analysis and knowledge transfer. Supported by state-of-the-art laboratories and information systems, we engage in fundamental and applied research with a strong focus on resource and environmental management, biodiversity, risk mitigation and ecosystem restoration. Four sub-themes summarise our range of activities:
Our funding sources reflect the inter-disciplinary and international nature of our research:
NERC, EPSRC, AHRC, European Commission, Leverhulme Trust, British Academy, British Council, Environment Agency, Government Office for Science, DEFRA, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Ordnance Survey, JISC, World Bank, British Geological Survey, Japanese Space Agency, Image Cat, US Department of Transport, Freshwater Biological Association, BP, Mekong River Commission, Cemex (UK) Ltd, US Department of Agriculture, Operation Wallacea.
Postgraduate students are strongly integrated into our research, contributing across all areas of activity and reflecting the international scope of our work.
Members of this theme are participating in the University’s Centre for the Environment.
