The German Department at the University of Nottingham is one of the leading centres for research in German Studies in the UK. In 1996 and 2001 it was awarded the highest grade (5*A) by the Higher Education Funding Council for the excellence of its research. In the national Research Assessment Exercise 2008 it was ranked fifth in terms of research power in UK German Studies, with just under 90% of its research output classed as having international quality. The Department has a vibrant postgraduate community and a lively research culture, reflected in its programme of research seminars and international confererences. Its research expertise ranges from linguistics and German Medieval studies through German literature and culture from the eighteenth century to the present day, to film and media studies, German intellectual history, and modern German history.
