The scientific aims of this Royal Society Joint project are: (1) Development of accurate mathematical and numerical modelling tools for micro-scale to nano-scale optical resonators and lenses. The resonators and lenses will be considered as uniform or layered transparent scatterers of specific shape; (2) Study of the effects of finite size and imperfect material parameters on the electromagnetic performance of wavelength-scale photonic circuit elements. (3) Clarification of the effects of the finite size of microscale resonators and lenses on the optical fields in the near and far zones. Generally, the wavelengths to dimension ratios to be studied imply that both resonance and ray effects exist together. Although their accurate analysis and clarification is a challenging task, the proposed methods are the key to success.
