 UK Summer School

The University of Nottingham's UK Campus Summer School is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students currently studying at the University's campuses in China and Malaysia, as well as a number of students from the UK campus.

The most recent summer school took place from Monday 3 to Friday 14 July 2017.

The programme focussed on business and management skills and used a series of interactive workshops to develop participant's skills in the six areas listed below.

UK Summer School


Course Information

Leadership and motivation

Lead a team in a product manufacturing simulation activity and experience the challenges of buying and selling in a changing market. You will compete against other teams with the aim to make the most profit from your sales at the end of the activity.

Business planning

Focus on the importance of planning within business and ways you can improve this


Assess your own personal attributes and discover how best you can contribute in a team exercise as well as how you can bring out the best qualities within your team mates.

Communication and presentation

Discuss why communication skills are so important as well as looking at some of the common challenges to effective communication and how these skills can be used to develop your own presentations.



Learn how to prepare, discuss and negotiate within the business world.

Final Project

Working in teams, you will need to use all the skills you have learnt during the programme to plan, film, edit and produce a short film. On the last day, you will show your film to the whole Summer School group, along with a short presentation. The course tutors and International Office staff will then judge the films and the best group film will win the summer school prize!


 Field Trip

Visit a local business, based in the East Midlands, to learn how a working business operates in its daily functions and take a tour of the site.

Cultural Excursions

Two cultural excursions are included in the programme:

Chatsworth House and Gardens
Located in the Derbyshire Peak District, Chatsworth House is the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. You will be given an introductory tour of the magnificent house by one of Chatsworth's experienced guides and view its impressive art collections followed by the opportunity to explore Chatsworth's 150 acre garden. The site also includes cafés, restaurants and shops for refreshments and gifts. For further information, please visit the Chatsworth website.

Home to the world-famous university, King's College Chapel and punting on the River Cam; explore the historic city's museums, art galleries and shops with many cafés and restaurants for refreshments and relaxation. For further information, please visit the Cambridge tourism website.


Programme costs and accommodation

The tuition fee for the Summer School is £750 for students from our China and Malaysia Campuses, including cultural excursions and a field trip.

There are two room-types available in university-arranged, catered accommodation, which includes breakfast and an evening meal per day and a bedding pack, for a duration of 13 nights:

  • Single study (shared bathroom between five students): £271.18 (£20.86 per night).
  • Shared en suite (shared bathroom between two students): £304.07 (£23.39 per night).

Costs do not include travel between your home country and the UK, domestic travel and personal expenditure during the programme.

English language level

The language of instruction for the course is English. In order to fully access the programme, the English language ability of participants should be equivalent to IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each element.
