Greener ways to work

We all know that the use of finite fossil fuels to produce energy is not sustainable and is damaging our planet. That’s why the University is working hard to reduce energy consumption, increase efficiencies and use more renewable energy sources and reduce its carbon footprint, we have set ourselves ambitious carbon targets and we need your help to achieve these. Find out more about our carbon targets PDF file icon.

What the University is doing

  • Generating our own energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar panels, solar water heating and biomass boilers
  • Installing low-energy lighting
  • Upgrading insulation in our buildings
  • Designing new buildings to be as energy efficient as possible and maximise natural daylight
  • Improving corridor ventilation systems
  • Cutting down on the need for air conditioning
  • Running a number of green IT projects to cut down on printer use, introduce automatic PC shut off at night, and promote greener ways to use IT.

What you can do

  • Only use the lights you need and switch off when not in use
  • Consider alternatives to leaving your PC on overnight and at weekends. WakeMyPC
  • Report heating, cooling and lighting faults to the Estates Office helpdesk on 16666
  • Switch off all PCs and other electrical equipment when not in use – particularly don’t leave on overnight
  • Don’t leave lab equipment (such as fume cupboard fans) running when not in use
  • Switch off vending machines overnight and at weekends
  • If a room is too hot and you can’t change the temperature, call the helpdesk on 16666
  • If doors and windows won’t shut properly, call the helpdesk on 16666.

Key facts

  • A fume cupboard left running 24/7 consumes more than £1,500 of energy per year
  • We have set ourselves a target to reduce carbon emissions by 34% by 2020
  • Each year the University spends in excess of £9 million on energy per year
