Waste

Greener Targets

We can save energy and stop so much waste going to landfill by reducing, reusing and recycling. The University is committed to cutting waste and set an ambitious recycling rate target of 40% by 2011-12, with your help we have hit that target already. In 2009/2010 we hit a recycling rate of 41%, we want to do more and with your help we can.

What the University is doing

  • Currently recycling 41% of the waste we generate
  • Diverting over 1,000 tonnes of materials from landfill
  • Operating lots of recycling points across our campuses
  • Introduced recycling facilities for food waste in all main catering areas
  • Working with contractors to reduce waste during construction projects
  • Reusing spare furniture
  • Recycling all IT equipment through our IT supplier

What you can do

  • Use the numerous recycling points throughout the campus - if you think we need more tell us
  • As well as the usual paper, glass and plastic, you can also recycle old mobile phones, clothes, CDs and ink cartridges at numerous locations across our campuses. See map for details www.nottingham.ac.uk/estate/environment/recyclingmap.html
  • Photocopy and print on both sides of the paper
  • Think about whether you really need to print something
  • Use mugs instead of disposable cups
  • Before buying a replacement item, see if it’s cheaper to repair
  • Reuse envelopes for internal mail
  • Use rechargeable batteries and refillable ink cartridges.
