What's on during Welcome Week?

The Graduate School supports all postgraduates and early career research staff at The University of Nottingham by providing training and development opportunities, workshops and events, help with funding, dedicated social and study spaces and the chance to socialise with other Postgraduate students.

Postgraduate Welcome Presentation

All postgraduates are invited to attend this presentation which will give you a brief introduction to the various facilities open to you and the chance to hear from your Student's Union and PGSA.

This official welcome presentation will be delivered by the Dean of the Graduate School, Professor Jerry Roberts, or Head of the Graduate School, Tessa Payne.

This year we will be hosting presentations at each of the three Nottingham campuses, the same presentation will be run each time.

University Park Campus

  • 9–9.45am - C15, Pope Building, University Park 
  • 10-10.45am - C15, Pope Building, University Park 
  • 2-2.45pm - A48, Sir Clive Granger Building, University Park

Disability Adviser Presentation

  • 1–2pm  - CLT2, Exchange Building, Jubilee Campus 

    The Disability Adviser for Postgraduate Students provides information and support for disabled students, including those with long-term medical conditions, dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.  This presentation will give you advice on the support the University can offer you, information about Disabled Students' Allowance and details of how to make an appointment.

    This presentation will also be delivered at the Sutton Bonington Campus today between 3.30-5pm, as well as on University Park Campus on Thursday 29 September from 4-5pm.

 

Night out with the PGSA

  • 7pm onwards
    Pitcher and Piano , Nottingham City Centre

    Free newcomers night out and a chance for new postgraduates to see the city and socialise with fellow students.  No tickets needed - just turn up!

    There will be limited free busses from Broadgate Park, Melton Hall, Raleigh Park, Cloister House and the Savoy Cinema in Lenton from 7.30pm.

 

Tuesday 27 September 2011

  • 2-4pm
    PGSA freecycle event - Graduate School,  A8, Pope Building, University Park Campus

    Join us in the Graduate School to exchange and pass down unwanted goods instead of throwing them away. Come along to the event and see what treasures you can find!

    We have donations of unwanted household items (small items of furniture, lamps, rugs, cushions, kitchen equipment) from ex-students up for grabs.

  • 5-7pm
    PGSA free film - Screening Room (LG140), Hallward Library, University Park Campus

    Why not take some time out during the busy Welcome Week and join us for a free film screening?  This is a great opportunity to relax for a couple of hours, enjoy a film and meet other students.  Refreshments will be available after the film.

  • 9am-5pm
    Postgraduate registration - Sports Hall, University Park

    You will need to register for your postgraduate course in the Sports Hall.  Students should attend at the relevant time for their school.

    The support services fair will also be available throughout the day and provides information on the range of support, information and specialist services to enhance your student experience.

    Representatives from the Graduate School and PGSA will be on hand to answer any questions.

A day of presentations aimed at helping you get settled into University life.

  • 10-11am and 11-12pm
    Information Services presentation
    An essential presentation on using IT facilities, libraries and learning resources (please arrive early as this event is popular).

 

  • 12.30-1pm
    Postgraduate Placement opportunities presentation
    Find out how you can help a local organisation by undertaking a short, project based placement and enjoy many benefits:

    • learn new skills and improve your CV
    • make contacts and gain experience
    • earn up to £1,200
    • enhance your employability
  • 1-2pm
    Volunteering as a postgraduate - presentation by the Student Volunteer Centre

    Help in finding opportunities that can give you the experience and extra skills to put you one step ahead when applying for jobs.

  • 2-2.30pm
    Student Ambassador Scheme presentation
    Do you enjoy studying at The University of Nottingham? Could you encourage others to consider Higher Education? If the answer is yes, become a Student Ambassador - the work is flexible and fun!

 

  • 2.45-3.45pm
    Part-time work through Unitemps
    This presentation investigates finding and applying for part-time work on campus and with local businesses, and the value of part-time work for your employability.

Disability Adviser Presentation

  • 4–5pm - LG13, Trent Building, University Park

The original Nottingham ghost walk with the PGSA

  • 7-9pm
    Tickets will be on sale from the Student's Union reception or online at www.su.nottingham.ac.uk

    Busses depart from University Park, East Drive bus stop at 7.30pm and pick-up at the Savoy Cinema, Lenton at 7.45pm.

 

Friday 30 September 2011

  • 10.30am – 3pm
    World’s biggest coffee morning! - The Graduate School, A8, Pope Building, University Park 

    The Graduate School is holding a charity coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. There will be cakes and refreshment plus games, a raffle and music!

    Free entry but donations appreciated for refreshments and cake.

    Big night out with the PGSA
    Venue tbc - keep an eye on the PGSA website
