Partner PhDs

Innovative models of PhDs at The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham recognises that for some students there will be significant benefits in working with academic staff at other institutions for extended periods of time as part of their PhD.

In addition to our standard full time and part time PhDs, we also offer further models of PhD which will enable you to experience these benefits, should you wish to.

Academic Partner PhD

This model enables academic staff at non-UK universities to undertake a PhD as part of their personal development, and will require the support of their home institution.

Students would be expected to come to Nottingham at least twice during their period of study (spending up to eighteen months in the UK in total) in order to work with their supervisor. The rest of their period of study would be spent at their own institution.

Before applying for this PhD it is important to ensure that the University of Nottingham has a partnership agreement with your institution and the expertise required to supervise the topic of your choice.

Visit the University Partners webpage for more information

Nottingham Intercampus PhD

This model enables current research students to spend up to a year at another University of Nottingham campus as part of their PhD e.g. at our campuses in China or Malaysia.

For further information please visit the International Office or email the Study Abroad Team at studyabroad@nottingham.ac.uk.

U21 Joint PhD

In May 2009, Universitas 21 established a unique framework for jointly awarded PhDs. Unlike a number of other joint degree programmes, under this scheme, two partner universities will create a tailor-made programme of study for each student, taking individual research needs into account and enabling collaboration with another of the network’s universities.

Visit the U21 Joint PhD webpage for more information.
