Mentor Update: Keeping up to date
It is important that you maintain your status as an active mentor so you can continue to assess students during their placements.
To maintain your status as an active mentor you should have an annual mentor update, contribute to mentoring at least 2 students in a 3 year period and complete your triennial review every 3 years.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stipulate that mentors should be updated annually and you can complete a mentor update in a number of ways, however you should have a ’face to face’ update once in a 3 year period.
It is recommended that you keep evidence of your updates and a record of the students you have mentored as you will need this information for your triennial review and may be used as evidence towards your NMC revalidation.
For information regarding your mentorship status please contact your local trust database holder or practice learning facilitator. Those mentors working in the PVI sector should contact the School of Health Sciences.
Face to face or group updates are run regularly by the Trusts and School of Health Sciences. Look out for advertisements for these sessions in your area. Group updates can also be organised on team training days. Contact your University Link Lecturer or Trust practice learning facilitator for further details.

Update via PLT meetings
You can update through attendance and participation at PLT meetings, this would be a ‘face to face’ update. All staff are welcome to attend their PLT meeting, please contact your PLT representative for details.
Update online using the Online Mentor Update
This is a web based update that can be completed as an individual on line. You will need to complete a short questionnaire before submitting your details to enable us to update your database record.

Update one to one
For some staff, bespoke updates may be preferable on a face to face basis dependent on their needs and the needs of the placement. This can be discussed with your University Link Lecturer Trust practice learning facilitator.
Please refer to your Trust Intranet for further details of the triennial review process including forms and guidance. It is important you inform your Trust database holder once your triennial review has been completed.
