'Equal pay is common justice'

In 1968, the women at the Ford auto plant in Dagenham go on strike.  As sewing machine operators making the covers for car seats, their jobs have been reclassified from semi-skilled to unskilled.  But this isn't about whether or not they are skilled.  They are getting paid less because they are women.  They team up and fight effectively for a principle which is now a fundamental right of workers:  equal pay for equal work.  Their action led to the Equal Pay Act 1970.  However, nearly 40 years later, women working full-time across the UK still earn on average 15.5% less an hour than men working full-time.  Friday 4 November is Equal Pay Day in the UK, the day when women stop getting paid.
